The Mandurah Environment and Heritage Group was set up in conjunction with the City of Mandurah ’s Community Development Team in April 2012 following a Mapping Our Community Heritage and Environment Event wh ere we: Informed a long-term plan for future community facilities; Developed strategies to help our field and our commu nity to flourish; Explored the strengths and challenges facing our field in regards to: People, Assets and Infrastructu re, Funding, Systems and Processes; Shared ideas, opportunities and networks. Following this successful event, the Community Development Team acknowledged the strong feelings in the commun ity about protecting our local natural and built heritage which are considered Mandurah’s best assets. The team not only encouraged the formation of our group, but pledged to support us in our aims to share information about events and the issues affecting our community and to discuss how we can get involved, raise awareness and have a positi ve effect on what we value in and around Mandurah. We are proud that our ideas were incorporated into the City of Mandurah’ s 20 Year Strategic Community Pla n.

education in a fun and playful way . Dudley Dolphin makes feature appearances at events, festivals, sch ools and clubs throughout the year. He is also the mascot for Clean Up Australia Month in March. The Mandurah area has a population of over 100 dolphins; many of which have been identified and named. The rivers and estuary offer protection from predators and are used as a n ursery for their calves and as feeding grounds. Calves are born betwe en December and April each year. Mandurah’s dolphins face many threats including strandings, sunburn while be ing stranded, boat traffic, fishing line entanglement, shark bites and pollution of their marine envir onment. Together as a community we can help make our waterways a safer place for our dolphins to live, fish and play. Check out the wonde rful work being done by ou r friends the Estuary Guardians, the Coastal Waste Warriors and the Mandurah Volunteer Dolphin Rescue Gro up.
Become a Citizen Scientist with Dolphin Watch If you like dolphins and have a smartpho ne, then this is f or you! Dolphin Watch is an easy-to-use app designed to encourage people of all ages and abilities to recor d dolphin sightings to assist scientific research into sustaining the local dolphin population. The app automatically takes note of the time and location (GPS) of dolphin sight ings before uploading that data in real time to the Dolphin Wa tch data base. Would you like to be able to identify the dolphins that regularly visit the Mandurah waters and learn their names? Click here to visit the Mandurah Dolphin Research Project on Faceboo k.
Report a st randed dolphin If you see a stranded or distressed whale or dolphin call the Wildcare Helpline on (08) 9474 9055, and a Parks and Wildlife officer will arrive as so on as they can. While waiting, put your safety first, try to be quiet, keep the animal’s skin cool and moist with buckets of water, but avoid the blowhole. DO NOT stand close to the tail or head or attempt to push the animal back out to sea – this will only add to its suffering. Also, do not apply sunscreen even if the animal’s skin is bu rnt.

MTA promotes awareness and education about the value of trees within the Mandurah area. We encourage urban greening; the planting of trees and shru bs in urban locations e.g. street verges, parks, reserves and home gardens. Our preference is Western Australian species and their hybrids, which are havens for native bi rds to feed and shelter. Download our Suggested WA Trees, Shrubs and Companion Plantings for the City of Mandurah area. Help protect habitat for our local wildlife and check whethe r you live in a tree preservation area before pruning or removing any trees. Fines apply for un approved clearing. Request a free street tree from the City of Mandurah.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED ! Our Mandurah Nature Trails project to plant up to a thousand trees to provide nature links between reserves and to create coo l green walking trails throughout Mandurah has rece ived funding from the City of Mandurah and the Australian Government. We need help all year round – groun d preparation, planting, weeding, mulching, watering, ongoing tree care – depending on the season. We also need schools and youth grou ps to h elp.
On 29th October a small team braved the elements to mulch the seedlings near the boat ramp in Riverside Garden s. Thank you to the Rotary Club of Mandurah Districts who were on standby to mulch. The City of Mandurah beat them to it! Click on the photos to e nlarge .
On 6th September banksias were planted at Riverside Gardens Reserve by Jacob Cumberworth, Daniela Buters, Dael Olfzowy and Taryn Hughes. Also helping were Robyn Devenish and Sandra Dandie. Thank you al l.
Men of the Trees volunteers help MEHG prepare the planting areas at Riverside Gardens Reserve on the Serpentine River on 10 August. Thank you to Lisa Wray, Judy Olsen and Carol Lymn for helping us to prepare the soil for a planting session with John Tonkin Coll ege students later in the day. Coloured markers were used to differentiate the different species of banksia - Menziesli and Attenuata.

NEW :  Read the Osprey Breeding Census for the Peel Inlet and Harvey Estuary 2024 co urtesy of Birdlife WA. The Osprey Monitoring Program started in January 2024 by Lisa Wray in conjunction with MEHG to collate years of historical data and knowledge about the local population of eastern ospreys (Pandion haliaetus cristatus) that call the Peel-Harvey Estuary their home. Ospreys are a majestic bird that grace our waterways and inlets as they fly overhead in search of fish. Ospreys execute a spectacula r plunge to catch their prey with wings folded back and their legs extended forw ards.
They will partly submerge and rise out of the water with a large fish. Ospreys build their nests close to water, in an elevated position and this can even be in a tree in someone’s front yard, an ar tifi ci al nesting platform, mobile phone tower or other tall structure.
One osprey nest can be found on top of the Te lstra mobile phon e tower on the corn er of Pinjarra Road and Forrest Street in Mandurah.
The breeding season starts in May/June when nest repairs are undertaken, and pair bonds are strengthened.  Incubatio n during August and September takes about 36 days and chicks are usually first seen in early October and leave the nest around Christmas t ime.
Mandurah Environment and Heritage Group is working in close conjunction with the City of Mandurah and Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions (DBCA) to census how many ospreys are breeding around the Peel-Harvey estuary and along the Serpentine, Murray and Harvey ri vers.
Ospreys are an indicator species on the health of the Peel-Harvey Inlet, fish stocks and surrounding habitats.  A register of th e number of breeding pairs will allow us to monitor future trends. The Peel-Harvey Inlet has the largest osprey population in the south-west of Western Australia. We have surveyed aro und th e Peel Harvey estuary and have located about 40 osprey nesting sites, but many of these are no longer active or have fallen into disrepair. Ospreys also breed along the Serpentine and Murray rivers. This season we hope to ge t a better understanding of the distributi on of osprey breeding sites around the inlet and we are looking for volunteers who will adopt a nesting site and report on the pr ogr ess and outcome of its breeding pair. We are confident that with your help we will be able to find out how many active nests we have and how many osprey chicks ar e raised. There are still many nest sites to be discovered, and we are keen to hear about these.  Some residents might have histori cal in formation about a nesting site that they have been monitoring for many years, eve n decades. This information is very valuable in clarifying the past distribution of ospreys. Some sites can only be surveyed by boat. At pr esent th e eastern side of the inlet is poorly surveyed, as is th e region around the Harvey Rive r. Ospreys must contend with an increasing number of boats churning up the water, removal of large nesting trees due to housing developments and discarded fishing lines with hooks.
Storms cause nests to collapse, h eatwaves cause mortality among chicks, and Australian ravens continuou sly harass ospreys
The “Adopt an Osprey Nest” program is a community science initiative that utilises interested volunte ers to monitor osprey nests and track the reproductive success of nesting pairs throughout th e Peel-Harvey estuary and rivers. Surveying the reproductive success of osprey nesting pairs gives us valuable insights into the current distribution and health of populations. Data from these surveys is used to aid their conservation e fforts.

Nature Reserve

The Friends are a group of voluntee rs wh o work with the Department of Parks and Wildlife and other partners to manage and improve this unique A Class Nature Re serve (the vesting being for the purpose of conserv ation of Flora and Fauna) located on the shoreline of the Mandurah Estuary at Halls Head on the corner of Egret Point Road and Wedgetail Retreat. Scenic boardwalks, two bird hides (one with all-abilities access), paver art installations (recently restored), an information she lte r and a disability parking bay make this reserve at tractive and user- friendly. No dogs allowed due to species nesting on the ground. There is the added bonus of the well-appointed Grahame Heal Reserve on the opposite corner, complete with barbecue and sh elter. The Friends of Samphire Cove Nature Rese rve meet at 9.00am on the last Sunday of each month to carry out flora and fauna rehabilitati on and to tidy up the reserve. In the summer months we usually water our new plants and do a spot of weeding. We stop at 10.30am for BYO morning tea and to greet visitors. Call by and say hello! You may wish to join us? Contact us to fin d out more. Alternatively, phone Mandurah Parks & Wildlife O ffice on 9303 7750 or a Conservation Officer on 0427 987 935. Volunteers are covered by DBCA insurance.
